CALL FOR SAN ANTONIO MASTERSINGER CHORAL SCHOLARS
2024-25 Season
Celebrating local singers.
The San Antonio Mastersingers, a 501(c)(3) organization, is pleased to announce a scholarship opportunity for talented current collegiate voice students. We are seeking dedicated individuals who are passionate about choral music and committed to excellence in choral performance in the greater San Antonio area.

Scholarship Details:
Eligibility:
-
Must be currently enrolled as a music major in Music Education or Vocal Performance at a college or university in the San Antonio area or surrounding areas.

Should have a strong background and experience in choral singing.

Must demonstrate a high level of musicianship and vocal technique.
Responsibilities:
-
Attend and actively participate in all scheduled rehearsals throughout the season.

Perform in all concerts and additional community events as required.

Collaborate with the music director, Mastersingers, and fellow choral scholars.
Benefits:
-
Scholarship Awards: $1,000 ($500 for each semester) pending successful performance of student’s responsibilities.

The membership fees to the Mastersingers are waived for the 2024-25 season.

Fee for Women’s concert wear is waived.
-
Possible opportunities for solo performance within the choir's repertoire.

Mentorship and guidance from the music director.
-
Networking opportunities with fellow choral scholars and members of the Mastersingers.

Application Process:
Applications will be accepted through August 1, 2024, and must be emailed to: ​scholarship@samastersingers.org
Applications must include the following:

1. An Application Form (found at the link below).

2. Two letters of recommendation from music instructors involved in the development of your vocal/choral accomplishments.
3. A 1-page essay (double spaced, 12-point font) that describes yourself, your future career goals as a musician or music educator, and anything else you feel we should know about you.
4. A sample of solo performance – please submit a Youtube link on the application form.
Only completed applications will be considered for a scholarship award.

Finalists will be auditioned by Music Director, Dr. Yoojin Muhn, and interviewed by the Mastersingers’ Scholarship Committee in August 2024.

Irma Taute Scholarship
Celebrating young voices.
Each season San Antonio Mastersingers awards the Irma Taute Scholarship in honor of longtime Mastersingers member and former Board Chair Irma Taute. This need-based scholarship is awarded to one middle-school or high-school student in the Advanced Choirs of The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio. Mrs. Taute served as Associate Director of the Children’s Chorus from 1996-2015, conducting the high school group in the CCSA Advanced Choirs. The Irma Taute Scholarship supports the work of The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, a frequent collaborator with the Mastersingers.

New this season, the San Antonio Mastersingers are pleased to award talented collegiate vocal students who are passionate about choral music and committed to excellence in choral performance in the greater San Antonio area. Choral Scholars must be enrolled as a music major in a greater San Antonio university or college and demonstrate a high level of musicianship and vocal technique. Scholars participate in the full concert season and enjoy mentorship and networking opportunities.

We are happy to announce our first two Choral Scholars, Carlin Alspaugh and De'Von O'Neal.
Soprano Caelin Alspaugh is studying music at Northwest Vista College and is a member of the Ariana Reyna-Acosta Vocal Studio. A graduate of Health Careers High School, she was a member of the Varsity Women’s Choir, a choir officer, and a soprano section leader. She garnered several accolades and awards through UIL, TMEA All-State, and other scholarships such as the San Antonio College "Music With Friends" scholarship. Caelin also studies piano with Paul Jensen and hopes to earn a Bachelors in Music Education. She has plans to direct at the high school level and impact the lives of students in a profound and positive way. This is Carlin's first season with the San Antonio Mastersingers.

Tenor De'Von O'Neal is an undergraduate Music Education major in the School of Music at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is a voice student of Professor John Nix and a member of the UTSA Chamber Choir.
