Brahms Requiem, John Silantien, conductor

Sunday,  Oct. 21st, 3:00 p.m.

For the Incarnate Word Chapel Music Series, the San Antonio Mastersingers present Johannes Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem).

The Mastersingers recreate the intent of Brahms in presenting his “human” Requiem as it was heard at the home of Sir William and Lady Thompson, Wimpole St., London, 1871 – in English with Brahms’ own piano four-hand arrangement (not merely a reduction of the orchestral material). Brahms purposefully chose biblical verses set in German instead of the traditional Latin text. He wrote that he might have titled the work “ein menschliches Requiem” (a human Requiem), since he wanted the text to reach listeners in their own language.
